The 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid has the destinction of being the most fuel-efficient SUV in the US market, and it even beats many subcompact gas-powered vehicles in fuel economy. Based on the same engineering concept as the Toyota Prius, the Escape Hybrid is propelled by 2 electrically powered motors at speeds under 25 miles per hour, while at higher speeds the 2.3 liter 4-cylinder engine kicks in for added power. A regenerative braking system helps to recharge the battery system during braking, giving the Escape better mileage in stop-and-go traffic than in highway motoring. Buyers also qualify for a $3,000 tax credit.
